Just a bit about our family. . .
Hello my name is Vicky and with my husband, John, and
our teenage daughter
we run the Little Rascals Farm. I have another daughter who is 25 and
lives in Pt. Townsend with her fiancé and twin step-sons, who you know
love to come visit grandma and grandpa at the farm!!
I have been a machine knitter for about 25 years and
machine knitting teacher for the last 5. I run my own knitting &
fiber business and we sell our products locally and on the internet.
This last summer '07 we increased our goat herd to
include three new girls, Sierra, Carrere, and Ivey. So this fall
we bred all six girls and come spring we should have a ton of fun with
our new crop of baby goaties!!
We also have six Shetland sheep who you can see in
the photo gallery. This last spring of '07 Misty had two black
ramlings (both whetherd) and Carmel (aka Minerva) had two brown but one
a ewe and one a ramling (also weathered).
We also purchased 7 Angora goats from a friend in
Seattle who was downsizing her herd (Thank you GC!!). I got two
mama's each with a set of twins, and one buck I call Billy Idol cause of
his white hair! Hopefully Billy did his job and we'll have 4
pregnant does that will give us some beautiful baby goaties in the
spirng!!
We also raise German & German/French/Satin Hybrid Angora Rabbits. We have
12
does and three bucks, one of which is my new 100% German Boy we
call Blitz. My daughter and I spin the angora wool into
yarn and make hats, scarves, and socks for our family and friends.
This all makes for one very busy family!
Typical day for me: I used to get
up at 6am to be sure my daughter gets to the bus stop by 7am, I drove her since we saw a bear at the bottom of the drive last
fall. Now I get up at 7am to be sure she gets out the door and then I give some hay to the angoras, sheep, alpines and rabbits so they
stop yelling at me! If it's milking season (like right now) I have
to milk the girls and process it. Then I get a break for breakfast and some email
and usually another cup of coffee.
Then, if I'm having a good day, I try and get some work
done in the studio (knitting usually, or fiber preparation so I can
knit), and somewhere between noon and the time my daughter gets home I
feed some more hay to the critters with some treats they like - got some
nice apples for the girls from a neighbor last fall, I'm sure to cause a riot if they see me grab the apple bag!
Once all the animals are taken care of I have to get ready for John to
come home or go to work (he does one week days and one week nights -
ugh!) which is either making dinner or making it and packing it for John
to take to work. And of course there's homework in-between, phone
calls, weavers & spinners guild projects (I'm the out-going president),
and my favorite tv shows to watch while I do the finishing work on the
projects I knit that day. By the time I fall into bed at 10pm I'm
beat!!!
If it's not a good day I go back to bed! Those of
you with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia know what I'm talking
about. This winter I've gone to bed more often than not, so I'm
cleaning house and trying to organize what I've got. See my 'forsale'
page to see what I'm de-stashing if you are interested!
